Mercyhealth Janesville Hospital and Trauma Center

The tower-like water feature is a sentinel at the entry to the hospital and anchors a modest contemplative garden where lush plantings and low limestone seatwalls embrace users and buffer the energy of the parking lots, drive aisles and front door.

Janesville, Wisconsin

Mercyhealth embarked on an ambitious renovation and expansion plan for their entire healthcare system, commissioning Saiki Design to work on a number of significant hospital and clinic projects including the renovation and entry enhancements at the Janesville Hospital and Trauma Center. The renovation included architectural elements which were extended from the building’s facade out into the landscape.

The entry space is organized around a circular drop-off drive area and the central island contains a lushly landscaped plaza and seating area. The focal point of this space is a large stone water feature, accessible to visitors, patients and staff alike.  Plantings and seat walls encircled the plaza, providing flexible areas for multiple users to occupy and creating a sense of privacy and enclosure in what would otherwise be a very exposed location.
