A 263-acre hospital campus for the Mercyhealth organization was designed and built in just over three years. It features massive swaths of restored prairie, walking paths, a green roof and rehabilitation play area, courtyard dining terrace and small, intimate seating areas.

The Tower Garden at Olbrich Botanical Gardens

The rose garden is an extraordinary two-acre garden where a myriad of roses and colorful perennials are backdropped by fountains, intricate paving and a 30-foot tower featuring native stone and exquisite detailing.

The roofs were designed to serve as an extension of the site; an intensive green roof adjacent to the hospital’s cafeteria provides a looped path, seating, a shade structure and lush plantings.

Saiki Design has been involved with planning and design at Olbrich Botanical Gardens since 1992 beginning with a collaborative comprehensive plan and numerous individual garden designs and renovations.

Challenged by a highly urban site, the courtyard is constructed above the building’s parking structure but it seamlessly melds the built environment with the landscape beyond.

Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center

The tower-like water feature is a sentinel at the entry to the hospital and anchors a modest contemplative garden where lush plantings and low limestone seatwalls embrace users and buffer the energy of the parking lots, drive aisles and front door.

The Brown Deer Living Room Project

“Containers Up” is a local vendor who retrofits and rents customized, repurposed shipping containers that occupied the site in a loosely organized arrangement called the “Oasis” to provide temporary food and beverage and activity spaces for DIY crafts, live music, and wellness classes. The success of this pop-up event led the design team to incorporate more permanently sited, renovated shipping containers into the final design.

The design embraces the College’s mission to advance innovative science education by creating outdoor demonstration, collaboration, and teaching spaces.

Bell Labs Headquarters

One of the highest priorities of the project was to protect and preserve as many of the existing large, mature oaks that defined the vegetative structure of the site. The design team carefully detailed a patio that floats off of the building with a boardwalk with low-impact footings that winds through the lowland oak savanna while mitigating impacts to the intertwined matrix of oak roots.

Saiki Design worked through a series of design iterations during the public engagement process, integrating input from City staff and other stakeholders at each milestone. Early design options considered a wide range of functions, aesthetics, maintenance, education and messages and explored public art themes unique to the space.

Recognizing the importance of nature and play in childhood development and an enrichment to the traditional library experience, the Kaukauna Public Library undertook years of initial design and fundraising to lay the groundwork for the Interactive Learning Garden.

Low maintenance native landscaping featuring an abundance of ornamental grasses and deep-rooted perennials was utilized in medians and raised planters to further enhance the aesthetics of the Verona Road corridor.

The rooftop terrace retrofit provided a larger, more diverse and more interactive space in which new amenities were seamlessly integrated with existing, resulting in a completely reimagined rooftop terrace and lifestyle experience.

The Thai Garden showcases a gifted sala, or pavilion, with a custom stone-lined reflecting pool surrounding the pavilion platform and a carefully curated selection of plant material to evoke the lush tropical landscapes of Thailand.

The project resulted in a number of infrastructure improvements and provided substantial site improvements in order to better accommodate overall programmatic and food service needs of the West Campus district.

The City of Dubuque received an EPA Brownfields Cleanup grant to fund the remediation and redevelopment of two underutilized city-owned parcels that form the gateway to the Washington Street neighborhood. Saiki Design led site planning and design efforts to re-envision the land as open space that integrates a city services building and connects to the Bee Branch Creek Restoration project.

Bee Branch Creek Restoration Open Space Plan

The project daylighted an existing storm sewer and created a linear corridor for stormwater management and conveyance that was envisioned as a useable and significant open space amenity for the neighborhood and City.

I-41 Reconstruction

The reconstruction of a major interstate highway by sheer nature of its duration and impacts challenged the design team to look closely and specifically at each individual interchange. Carefully combining unique community identity features and themes with an overall corridor design delivered a project that is cohesive and yet reflective of each individual communities it accesses.

Rest Areas 11 & 12 are among the most heavily trafficked in the state, and planting design solutions took into consideration the volume of visitor traffic and WisDOT maintenance challenges at every stage of the design process.

Keane Hall, built in 1913 and an icon of the Loras College campus, embodies a true reflection of the campus – its history and it’s special place atop the bluffs of Dubuque – and an exterior courtyard and patio renovation and expansion project now reflects the building’s significance and complements the historic architecture and campus identity.

Temple Beth El represents a historic religious community situated along the mature, wooded flanks of Lake Wingra and the landscape architects were commissioned to design a terrace and improved, elegant entry with grand stairway and an accessible walk for the synagogue to better serve the needs of its community.
