University of Wisconsin - Madison

Situated in the heart of the West Campus district, the design team was challenged to provide site planning and design for a 200,000 square foot addition, seamlessly integrating it into the steep topography that characterizes this area of campus. A lushly vegetated front plaza and terraced limestone walls invite pedestrians traveling by foot along the Linden Drive corridor to pass through or gather.

The project included a included a rooftop terrace that serves as a unique gathering space with views of Henry Mall and West Campus. The design team collaborated to select timeless, durable materials that reflect the rich character of the building. Ipe decking, granite pavers and custom wooden benches and pergola make up the terrace’s framework while lushly planted parapet walls and checkered squares of sedum soften the perimeter of the space.

The design team also worked closely with the University of Wisconsin Preschool Laboratory to create an outdoor playground that serves as an extension of the classroom and provides opportunities for natural and sensory play. The design for this specialty space incorporated natural materials and unique climbing objects, provided raised gardening beds and maintained flexibility to allow children to manipulate an ever-changing landscape.

The project rigorously pursued and was awarded LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and was recognized with a design award from the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
